ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Alex Gregory, Nick Minter and Reggie Keen had three hits each as Radford downed UNC Asheville 8-4 in Big South Conference baseball action at Greenwood Field Friday night.

The Highlanders (11-11, 5-3 BSC) also received strong pitching from starter Alex Taylor (3-3) who limited the Bulldogs to just two runs and six hits over seven innings.

UNC Asheville (5-23, 3-9 BSC) was led at the plate by Beau Zinman and Danny Baatz with two hits each.

UNC Asheville opened the scoring in the first inning. Justin Schumer walked and one out later,  Zinman doubled to left-field to score Schumer for a 1-0 Bulldog lead.

Radford quickly tied the game in the top of the second. Keen doubled to lead off the inning.  One out later, Robert Lamas drove in his first run of the game with a run-scoring double to knot the game at 1-1.

The Bulldogs regained the lead in the bottom of the second. Baatz singled to open the inning and stole second with one out. Freshman Jordan Lurie delivered a run-scoring single to push Asheville in front 2-1.

It stayed 2-1 until the fifth. Gregory tripled off the center-field wall to begin the frame. Minter drove him in with a double to tie the game at 2-2.

RU took the lead for good in the seventh. With two outs, Gregory singled. He went to second on a single by Minter.  Keen delivered a run-scoring single to plate Gregory with the go-ahead run and a 3-2 Highlander lead.

The visitors put the game away in the ninth with five runs. Gregory began the uprising with a two-run homer for a 5-2 Radford lead. Minter scored another run on a wild pitch. A squeeze bunt from Lamas made it 7-2 before the final run scored on a Bulldog error.

The Bulldogs picked up two runs in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a walk, hit batter and error by Ty Rivers in center field. Pinch-hitter Billy Enright drove in the final run of the game on a ground-out.

UNC Asheville and Radford play the second of their three-game series Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field starting at 3 p.m.
