ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Former UNC Asheville right-hander pitcher Alan DeRatt will be back at home this spring. DeRatt, the 2008 Big South Conference Pitcher of the Year, will be a member of the Asheville Tourists minor league club this season and will begin the season pitching out of the bullpen.

DeRatt was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 17th round with the 527th pick of the 2008 Major League Baseball First Year Players Draft. He pitched for the Casper Ghosts last summer before being promoted to the Tourists this season. DeRatt becomes the first UNC Asheville baseball player to ever play for the Asheville Tourists.

UNC Asheville head coach Willie Stewart is delighted to see his former player in Asheville.

“This is wonderful news that Alan DeRatt will be pitching for the Asheville Tourists this year,” stated Stewart. “We're all anxious to see him pitch this season for the Tourists. He'll play for a great manager in Joe Mikulik (Asheville Tourists manager) and it should be a great experience for him.”

DeRatt finished the 2008 season, seventh in the nation in ERA at 1.74.  He went 8-2 in 14 starts. DeRatt was on the Wallace Watch List of the top 64 players in the country until the list was narrowed to 16 before the start of the Super Regionals.

The Cary native finished his career as the school's all-time leader in games started (55), innings pitched (365.2) and strikeouts (247). His 22 career wins is second all-time at UNC Asheville.
