Baseball Falls at Campbell, 7-3

Bulldogs Split Double Header with Cougars

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Mike Vaughn's walk off two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning gave UNC Asheville an 8-7 victory over the College of Charleston in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Greenwood Field. Charleston came back to win game two 9-3.

With Charleston (26-16) leading 7-6 in the opener, Beau Zinman led off the ninth with walk off reliever Corey Ashner (1-3). Justin Schumer sacrificed Zinman to second base. Vaughn hit a 2-1 pitch over the right field fence to give UNC Asheville (8-25) its first ninth inning victory of the season. It was also the Bulldogs first win in a one-run game this season.

Charleston scored two runs in the opening inning off Asheville starter Taylor Wohlwend. Clay McCord led the game off with a triple and scored on a RBI single by Brandon Sizemore. With the bases loaded, Ryan Daniels grounded into a double play to plate the second run.

Asheville scored a run in the second on a RBI single by Austin Graham. In the third, Jordan Lurie led off with a single. Kevin Weidenbacher was hit by a pitch, and Zinman delivered a RBI single to make the score 3-2. With runners at first and third, Vaughn reached on an error that scored Reed Kreiser with the tying run. Zinman gave Asheville the lead as he scored on a fielder's choice ground out by Graham.

Charleston retook the lead 5-4 on a two-run home run by Daniels in the fifth. It was Daniels seventh home run of the year. A RBI triple by Kolby Epley gave the Cougars a 6-4 lead.

Lurie had a RBI single in the sixth and Danny Baatz had a RBI hit in the seventh to tie the game at 6-6. Charleston scored an unearned run in the eighth to set up Vaughn's heroics.

Grier Harrington picked up the win in relief to move to 1-1 on the season. He threw two innings allowing just an unearned run on two hits.

In the nightcap, Charleston jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Tom Schiller threw a complete game going seven innings allowing three runs on five hits to improve to 4-2 on the year.

The Bulldogs picked up their first hit by Zinman to lead off the fourth inning. After to moving to second on a bunt, Zinman scored on a base hit by Graham. In the fifth, Catlin Carter led off with a double. Weidenbacher tripled to score Carter and then scored on a RBI ground out to cut the deficit to 6-3.

A solo home run by McCord and a two-run shot by Austin Morgan push the Charleston lead to 9-3. Ryan Dull took the loss for Asheville to drop to 3-9 on the season.

Asheville will go on the road on Wednesday to play Appalachian State at 7 p.m.
