College of Charleston Downs UNC Asheville 6-1

04.24.2009 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Ryan Daniels drove in three runs to back up great pitching by College of Charleston starter Jesse Simpson as the Cougars downed UNC Asheville 6-1 in a non-conference battle at Greenwood Field Friday afternoon.

College of Charleston (25-15) got seven strong innings from starter Jesse Simpson (7-2). He limited the Bulldogs to six hits and one run, striking out two and walking three.

Kevin Weidenbacher had a great game for the Bulldogs (7-34) at the plate by going 3-for-3 with three singles. Danny Baatz added two hits, while Mike Vaughn drove in Asheville's only run with a run-scoring double in the seventh inning.

The Cougars picked up two runs in the first inning thanks to two walks and a catchers' interference called that wiped out a double-play ball that would have ended the inning. Daniels drove in his first run with a sacrifice fly and Matt Mansilla followed with a run-scoring single to push the lead to 2-0.

The Cougars plated two more run in the third on run-scoring double from Brandon Sizemore and a run-scoring single from Daniels.

Daniels added another RBI-single in the fifth for a 5-0 College of Charleston lead. He finished the day 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

The Cougars finished the scoring in the seventh when they tacked on an unearned run when Greg Blake drove in Mansilla for a 6-0 lead.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the bottom of the seventh. Vaughn's double to center field plated Danny Baatz to make it 6-1.

The home team had a threat in the eighth and ninth innings as Asheville put two runners on with less that two outs but relievers Casey Lucchese and Robert Jeroszko managed to keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard.

The teams will play a double-header on Saturday at 1 p.m.
