Bulldogs Fall to Coastal Carolina in First Round of Big South Championships

ROCK HILL, S.C. ? The third-seeded Coastal Carolina Chanticleers advanced to Friday's semi-finals after defeating No. 6 seed UNC Asheville, 5-0 in the first round of the 2009 Big South Men's Tennis Championship on Thursday, April 16 on the campus of Winthrop University.

Coastal Carolina won No. 1 and No. 3 in doubles action to take a 1-0 lead. CCU's duo of German Perez and Ernesto Ramos defeated Mauricio Correa and Nicolai Nonnenbroich 8-3 while Dmitry Vlaskin and Plamer Tzvetkov won 8-3 over Alexander Greer and Alex Appelt.

Perez and Joseph Withers both finished their matches at the same time to clinch the win. Perez won 6-1, 6-1 over Jonas Brobeck while Withers won 6-0, 6-2 over Appelt to put the Chanticleers in the semi-finals for the second straight year.  Coastal Carolina quickly took a 2-0 lead in the match as Vlaskin defeated Nonnenbroich, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3. The Chanticleers took the No. 6 singles as Withers won 6-1, 6-1 over Greer.

With the win, Coastal Carolina improves to 16-5 overall and will face No. 2 Winthrop in the semifinals at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 17.  Asheville end its season at 5-16 overall and 0-7 in the Big South.
