ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Coastal Carolina Monday afternoon at the Asheville School.
The Bulldogs earned the doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matches. Joe May and Nicolai Nonnenbroich defeated CCU's Dmitry Vlaskin and Plamen Tzvetkov 8-6 in the No. 2 match. Nathan White and Alexander Greer pulled off a 9-7 win over Joseph Withers and John Hairston at No. 3.
In singles, Nonnenbroich was leading Ernesto Ramos 3-1 in the first set of the No. 1 match; however, Nonnenbroich had to withdraw due to an injury he sustained after tripping on a crack on the court. White defeated Tzvetkov 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 at No. 4. In the No. 5 match, Sovic retired from the match after May defeated him in the first set, 6-0.
The deciding match occured at No. 2 as the Chanticleers' German Perez defeated Mauricio Correa 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
"It was unfortunate that Nicolai got injured," said head coach Lise Gregory. "He was up in his match and was playing well. This is the sixth match that we've lost 4-3. It's always tough to be so close and not come out with the win."
The Bulldogs drop to 3-14 overall and 0-5 in the Big South, while the Chanticleers move to 13-4 and 3-1 in the conference.
Asheville returns to action Friday as it hosts North Carolina Central at the Asheville School at 2 p.m.
