ASHEVILLE, N.C.-- UNC Asheville senior catcher Reed Kreiser has been listed on the 2009 Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Watch List. The list was released last evening by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission.

The Johnny Bench Award is given annually to the top Division I collegiate catcher. The initial list includes 44 catchers nominated for the award by their coaches.

Kreiser, a native of Louisburg, Kan., is a two-year starter at the position for the Bulldogs since transferring from Johnson County Community College.

Heading into this weekends series at VMI, Kreiser is hitting .288 with a Big South Conference high five home runs, four doubles, 15 RBI and 13 runs scored in 18 games.

Last season, the Asheville catcher led the team with 12 home runs and was fourth on the team with 42 RBI. He batted .284 while starting all 59 games behind the plate.

Kreiser was named the Big South Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 3, through Mar. 1, when he hit .438 with two home runs and six RBI, helping the Bulldogs to a 2-2 week.  He had hits in three of the four games, including two multi-hit games. For the season, Kreiser has had mulit-RBI in a third of Asheville's games.

The watch list will be narrowed down to 10 semifinalists, who will be announced May 14. Statistics will be compiled on each of the semifinalists and sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 3, prior to the NCAA Super Regionals and Major League Baseball Draft. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita, Kan., and the winner will be announced at the 12th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 26.
