Bulldogs Fall to #12 Coastal Carolina 12-2

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Daniel Bowman had four hits and Scott Woodard scored four runs as #12 Coastal Carolina downed UNC Asheville 12-2 in Big South Conference baseball action at McCormick Field Monday night.
The teams were scheduled to play a double-header but could only play one game. The game started at 3:30 p.m. and had a rain delay of close to an hour before ending after 8 p.m. The second game was cancelled.
Justin Schumer and Beau Zinman had two hits each for the Bulldogs. Derrick Hopkins drove in both runs for UNC Asheville.
The win was the Chanticleers (16-1, 2-0 BSC) 13th straight. The Bulldogs (3-13, 1-4 BSC) lost for the fifth straight time.
Coastal Carolina opened the scoring in the first inning with solo homers from Chance Gilmore and Woodard for a 2-0 Chanticleer lead.
The Bulldogs got a run back in the fourth on a run-scoring single from Hopkins.
Coastal Carolina sent nine men to the plate and scored four runs for a 6-1 lead in the fifth inning. The Chanticleers received RBI-doubles from Jose Iglesias and Bowman plus a run-scoring singles from Tyler Bortnick and Gilmore.
Asheville picked up its final run in the sixth. A sacrifice fly from Hopkins scored Schumer to cut the lead to 6-2.
The visitors put the game away with four runs in the seventh. Two run scored on a throwing error, another on a double-play ball and the final run was a RBI-single from Tommy Winegardner.
Coastal Carolina starter Bobby Gagg (2-1) earned the win with five solid innings pitched. He scattered four hits, struck out four, walked none and allowed just one run.
The Bulldogs host East Tennessee State at McCormick Field Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Coastal Carolina plays at Tennessee Tuesday at 4 p.m.
