CLEMSON, S.C. ? The UNC Asheville men's and women's Indoor Track and Field Teams were in action on the first day of competition at the Big South Indoor Championships Thursday at Clemson University.

The day was highlighted with solid performances from both Bulldog squads.

“We got off to a pretty good start, and I feel good going into tomorrow,” said coach Jesse Norman.

Juniors' Corrie Trotter and Natalie Pearson both had a part in the solid start for the Bulldogs.  Trotter finished in seventh place in the women's high jump with a height of 1.55 meters.  Pearson competed in the prelims of both the 60 meter dash and 200 meter dash, qualifying for tomorrow's final in both events with times of 7.67 seconds and 25.24 seconds respectively.

Freshman Emma Bussard ran well in the women's 3000 meter race finishing in ninth place with a time of 10:31. That time establishes a new personal best for Bussard.  She also ran a leg in the women's Distance Medley Relay along with teammates Rachael Ambrosia, Morgan Weeks, and Katie Olert.  The Relay team finished in sixth place with a time of 13:24.

On the men's side, freshman standout Sam Maynard led the way in the men's 800 meters.  Maynard posted a time of 1:57.65, qualifying him for tomorrow's final.  Senior Dane Corriher and junior Duane Stepp both competed in the men's 400 meter dash finishing with times of 50.40 seconds and 54.07 seconds respectively.

Sophomore Will Beasley finished ninth in the men's long jump with a leap of 6.27 meters.  In the men's shot put, Senior Daniel Corriher finished in 11th place with a throw of 13.40 meters.

Coach Norman's squads are looking to improve upon their finishes from last year when the men's team finished seventh and the women's squad came in eighth place.

“The kids are excited, so now we will see how many points we can put up on the final day,” stated Norman.

The final day for the Big South Championships will be tomorrow, starting with the men's Heptathlon 60 meter high hurdles at 9:30 a.m.
