ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Ana Baker scored 20 points to lead UNC Asheville to a 68-59 Big South Conference victory over High Point Saturday afternoon at Justice Center.
The senior guard made her final home game a great one as she was 9-of-18 from the field, grabbed six rebounds and dished out five assists. Fellow senior Jessica Monroe finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Lindsey Montgomery enjoyed her second second straight double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Kendall Shepard added 11 points.
The Bulldogs (10-16, 7-6 BSC) led from start to finish in winning their seventh league game of the year. High Point (11-15, 7-6 BSC) was led by Frances Fields with 17 points and eight assists.
Asheville led 53-50 with 10 minutes remaining before the Bulldogs went on an 8-2 run to build control of the game with a 61-52 lead. Baker and Montgomery combined for all eight points during the run.
The Panthers could get no closer than six points the rest of the way as Asheville went 7-of-8 from the free throw line in the final two minutes.
The Bulldogs defense limited High Point to just 33 percent (21-of-63) shooting from the field and 17 percent (2-of-12) shooting from the three-point line. Asheville out-rebounded the Panthers 49-42 and scored 17 second-chance points to just six for the visitors.
"This was a great win and our seniors in Ana and Jessica really led us," commented Bulldog coach Betsy Blose. "We battled for 40 minutes and I thought our defense and rebounding was consistent throughout the day."
UNC Asheville plays next at Big South leader Liberty next Saturday (Feb. 28).
