SPARTANBURG, S.C. - George Mason starting pitcher Kevin Crum allowed one run in six innings of work to lead the Patriots to a 7-1 victory over UNC Asheville in the first game of a doubleheader at the Courtyard by Marriott Classic at USC Upstate's Harley Park.

The Patriots (2-0, 0-0 CAA) put three runs on the board in the first inning.  With the bases loaded, Ryan Soares hit a single to center field off of Taylor Wohlwend that drove in Spencer Wiggins for the first run of the ballgame.  Chris Henderson crossed home plate after Wohlwend threw a wild pitch to Shane Davis.  Davis capped off the inning's scoring with a sacrifice fly that plated Scott Krieger.

In the top of the third with two outs, Asheville's (0-2, 0-0 BSC) Kevin Weidenbacher had the opportunity to drive in Cody Buch from third base.  However, Weidenbacher struck out looking to end the inning.

George Mason struck again in the top of the fourth as a sacrifice fly from Brent Weiss scored Mark Hill from third base.  With two outs, Wiggins singled to center field.  The next batter, Henderson, drove in Wiggins with a double down the left field line.

The Bulldogs scored their first run in the bottom of the fifth.  Weidenbacher hit a two out double that scored Austin Graham and advanced Danny Baatz to third base.  Catlin Carter stranded Baatz and Weidenbacher in scoring position after he struck out looking.

Dan Weller took over for Wohlwend in the top of the sixth.  Weller allowed two of the three batters he faced to get on base and was replaced by David Ricker.  A single by Henderson loaded the bases and Ryan Uphouse scored when Krieger hit a single to center field in the next at bat.

The Patriots capped off the game's scoring in the top of the seventh after a squeeze bunt by Weiss allowed Davis to score from third base.

The teams are scheduled to play the second game of the doubleheader at 4 p.m. in Harley Park.
