12.11.2009 | Women's Basketball
Montgomery became the first Bulldog player to score more than 20 points and grab at least 20 rebounds since Sheila Ford did it for the Asheville program in the 1983-84 season.
The Bulldogs (3-5) snapped a four-game losing streak by shooting a season-high 55 percent (31-of-56) from the field and out-rebounding the Warriors, 47-23. Linda Aughburns added 17 points for the home team, while Lindsey Thompson finished with 13 points. Kendall Shepard had eight assists. Red-shirt freshman Kelli Riles just missed a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.
Southern Wesleyan, a NAIA program, was led by guard Kesha Smith with 17 points and six assists. Jessica Auguste added 13 points. The Warriors chose this game to be an exhibition one for them and does not count against their record.
"Lindsey Montgomery had a great game tonight. She was all over the place and was tremendous," stated Bulldog coach Betsy Blose. "When you start having to go back to Sheila Ford's numbers then you've accomplished something.
"Overall, it was a good effort," added Blose. "We let Southern Wesleyan get back in the game in the second half but we responded pretty well and did a good job ending the game. This is a nice win for us after exams."
The Bulldogs led most of the way as Montgomery had a double-double in the first half with 11 points and 12 rebounds to give the home team a 44-31 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Warriors went on an 8-0 run taking advantage of some Asheville turnovers to creep to 59-53 on a free throw from Smith with 12:34 left.
But the Bulldogs responded by scoring the next 17 points to race to a 76-53 lead over the next four minutes. Asheville got eight points from Montgomery during the run and treys from three different players to put the game away.
Montgomery was 10-of-13 from the field and 9-of-13 from the charity stripe. She also had three assists, three steals and two blocked shots.
Asheville went 24-of-32 from the free throw line for 75 percent. The Bulldogs also had a season-high 25 assists.
UNC Asheville plays next when it hosts Georgia Southern at Justice Center Wednesday (Dec. 16) at 7 p.m.
