Bulldogs Drop Heartbreaker to Coastal Carolina

Chelsy Kimes led all players with 22 kills and added 10 digs for her 15th double-double of the season to lead Coastal Carolina (17-12, 10-5 Big South). Sierra Livesay had 16 kills and Jill Nyhof added 16 kills and nine blocks for the visitors. Coastal sweeps the season series from UNC Asheville for the third year in row.
The Bulldogs (23-9, 12-3 Big South) had an opportunity to clinch the top seed in the next week's Big South Tournament but still have a chance to share the Conference regular season title if they can beat Winthrop on Saturday.
Lauren Ficker had 13 kills and six blocks for Asheville while Raquel Miotto recorded a season-high 41 digs. She moved into fourth place on the NCAA all-time list with 2,622 career digs passing Stephanie Figgers who played at Stephen F. Austin from 2003-07.
The Bulldogs had a strong attack through the first two sets as they hit .273 in their two victories. However, the Dogs hit just .115 over the final three sets including -.200 in the fifth set Coastal Carolina was consistent in its hitting. The Chanticleers hit .242 in the match posting three set of .262 or better.
After the second set, Asheville was out hitting Coastal .273 to .262. Coastal out-hit Asheville.227 to .115 in the final three sets.
The Chanticleers changed the match in the third and fourth sets as they began to spread the ball around. Livesay had 12 kills in the final three sets after just four in the first two. Nyhof also had 12 kills in the final three stanzas after recording just three over the first two.
Coastal jumped out to an 8-3 lead to start the final set but Asheville responded with a 4-0 to force a CCU timeout at 8-7. After the timeout, the Chanticleers went on a 4-1 run to take a 12-8 lead. Asheville called timeout to regroup and once again pulled to 13-12 but the Chanticleers were able to get two kills from Kimes to end the match.
Both teams wrap up the regular season on Saturday. Asheville will host Winthrop in a 2 p.m. match and Coastal will travel to Gardner-Webb in a match that will also begin at 2 p.m. Both match can be seen on the Big South Network.
