Women's Soccer Finishes Up With Two Home Matches This Weekend
10.29.2009 | Women's Soccer
Asheville (4-9-1, 1-6-0 BSC) needs to win both matches and get a little help if the Bulldogs are to qualify for next weekend's Big South Conference Tournament in Charleston, S.C. Asheville is in ninth place in the league standings with only the top eight teams earning a berth in the tournament. The Bulldogs lost two frustrating games last weekend on the road as they fell 2-1 at Winthrop and 1-0 at Gardner-Webb. The winning goal in each match were own goals.
"We haven't had an own goal scored against us in a long time and for it to happen in two straight matches is really frustrating," explained Asheville coach Michele Cornish. "We're playing hard. We're battling but we're not scoring enough goals. We have to put the ball in the back of the net when we have the opportunity."
On defense, the Bulldogs have been just fine. Asheville leads the Big South in the least amount of goals allowed with just 15. They have out-shot most of their opponents but simply have not scored. The Bulldogs have been shutout in six of their last eight matches.
Friday's match will be a big match for Liberty, as well. The Flames are tied with Charleston Southern for first place with a 5-1-1 league mark. High Point has an overall record of 4-13-1 but the Panthers have played well in league play and have a 3-3-1 conference worksheet.
Sunday's game will be senior day. Prior to the match, the Bulldogs will honor their six seniors playing their final home match. The six seniors are Meagan Bradham, Sara Marie Holland, Veronica Lazar, Kristina Montuori, Keri Skelton. Lauren Turburke and McKenna Stockhausen.
