Women's Soccer Plays at Winthrop Friday Night
10.23.2009 | Women's Soccer
The Bulldogs (4-7-1 1-4-0 BSC) had a frustrating weekend at home last week as they fell to Charleston Southern, 1-0 on Friday and Coastal Carolina on Sunday, 2-0. Asheville fired 13 shots on goal in each match and had opportunities to score but simply couldn't get the ball into the back of the net.
"We really played some good soccer in each match, but we've got to find ways to score," declared Bulldog coach Michele Cornish. "We've worked hard on finishing this week in practice and hopefully it pays off this weekend."
Asheville and Winthrop have always played great matches, and Friday's should be another close affair. The teams have played 10 times and while Asheville has an 8-1-1 lead in the series, there's only been once match that's been decided by more than one goal. Last year had the Bulldogs winning at Winthrop in overtime, 1-0 on a goal by Robyn Busha.
"It's always a tough match with Winthrop," commented Cornish. "I'm sure our match on Friday will go right down to the wire like it always does."
Asheville plays at Gardner-Webb on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs next home game will be with Liberty on Friday, Oct. 30 at 3 p.m.
NOTES - Veronica Lazar leads the Big South in goals-against with a 0.83 average.
