Bulldog Women Host Radford on Saturday

ASHEVILLE, N.C.?The UNC Asheville women's basketball team returns to the court on Saturday as it hosts Big South Conference rival Radford in a 2 p.m. at the Justice Center. The game will be video streamed on bigsouthsports.com and live stats will be available at uncabulldogs.com.

 

The Bulldogs are 6-11 on the season and 3-1 in Big South play as they have won their last three Big South contests. Asheville is coming off back-to-back wins for the first time this season after defeating Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian last weekend.

 

Chioma Okoli and Ana Baker both average double-figure points for the Bulldogs. Okoli is seventh in the Big South in scoring at 11.5 points per game. Baker is 11th in scoring at 11.1 points per game and leads the league in assist to turnover ratio. Jessica Monroe is the Bulldogs' leading rebounder at 6.2 boards per game. She is coming off an 11 point, eight rebound performance against Presbyterian. This week's Big South Freshman of the Week, Lindsey Thompson leads Asheville in scoring in conference games averaging 13.3 points in the Bulldogs' four conference contests.

 

Radford enters today's action winners of two of its last three games. The Highlanders began the season playing their first six games on the road. They went 1-10 in non-conference play against solid competition. Since conference play has begun they have gone 2-1. Taleia Moton leads the team averaging 13.1 points per game. Johnette Walker leads the Big South in steals while averaging 11.5 points per game. Kymesha Alston is averaging a double-double with 14 points and 11.7 rebounds in three conference games. Overall, she leads the Highlanders in rebounding at 7.2 per game.

 

Radford leads the all-time series 39-12 against UNC Asheville. Most of those wins came in the early 90's while Radford was the dominant team in the Big South. Since Asheville defeated Radford in the 2007 Big South Championship game, the Highlanders have won the last three meetings. 

 

At Halftime of Saturday's game, the Bulldogs will recognize the participants in the inaugural Rocky's Readers Program. Rocky's Readers had to read five age appropriate books during the winter break, and each participant received a ticket for themselves and a parent to the game. The top three schools for participation in the 2008-09 Program were Leicester Elementary, Claxton Elementary, and Hominy Valley Elementary, and they will be recognized at halftime. All Asheville City and Buncombe County Elementary Schools were invited to participate in the program that will become an annual event.
