Bulldogs Fall in Overtime at Radford

01.10.2009 | Men's Basketball

RADFORD, VA. ? Matt Dickey went coast-to-coast for the game-tying basket at the end of regulation. However, Radford outscored UNC Asheville 17-7 in overtime to pull out a 98-88 Big South Conference win Saturday night at Peters Hall.

The Bulldogs (7-9, 3-2 BSC) trailed by five with 24 seconds left in the second half but rallied to tie the game at 81-81. Dickey scored on a lay-up as the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime.

In the extra session, each team hit four free throws to tie the game at 85-85. The Highlanders limited the Bulldogs to just three points the rest of overtime to have their three-game winning streak snapped.

Reid Augst led UNC Asheville with 27 points, while Sean Smith added 18 points. Freshman guard Chris Stephenson finished with a career-high 14 points.

Radford (7-9, 4-1 BSC) won its fourth straight game. Joey Lynch-Flour led the Highlanders with 22 points. Amir Johnson added 18 points and was 7-of-8 from the free throw line in overtime. Kenny Thomas and Artsiom Parakhowski contributed 15 points each.

“We battled and played hard but just came up a little short,” commented UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. “We just didn't do a good job on the boards and had a hard time stopping their inside game. Radford is a very good team but so are we.”

Radford never trailed in the game, out-rebounded Asheville 45-32, and used a big advantage at the foul line. The Highlanders were 32-of-43 from the line, while the Bulldogs were 17-of-22.

Asheville played its second straight game without leading rebounder and second leading scorer John Williams. The sophomore forward missed the game with an illness.

The Highlanders dominated inside in the first half to race to a 44-35 halftime lead. RU outscored the Bulldogs 24-4 in the paint. The home team shot 62 percent (16-of-26) from the field and went 9-of-11 from the charity stripe to build its nine-point lead.

Asheville stayed in the game with red-hot three-point shooting. The Bulldogs went 7-of-12 from beyond the arc. Smith led the way with 11 first half points, nine points coming on three 3-pointers.

Radford was led in the opening half by Thomas with 10 points.

The Bulldogs play at home Tuesday night against High Point starting at 7 p.m.

NOTES - Reid Augst is averaging 22 points in league play...the senior forward has scored in double figures in 13 of Asheville's 16 games...Chris Stephenson has scored in double figures in back-to-back games...Augst needs just eight points for 900 career points...Sean Smith's 18 points was a season-high.
