CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? National power North Carolina had to hold off a determined effort by UNC Asheville before the Tar Heels escaped with a 2-1 victory over the Bulldogs at Fetzer Field Tuesday night.

UNC Asheville (2-4-2) played more than half the match with 10 players but batted the nationally-ranked Tar Heels right to the end.

North Carolina opened the scoring in the first half when Cameron Brown scored in fourth minute to give the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead.

Later in the first half, senior forward J.W. Gallagher of UNC Asheville was given a second yellow card and was ejected from the game.

The Bulldogs trailed 1-0 at halftime but came out strong in the second half. Asheville tied the match in the 55th minute when senior Scott Szymanski scored his first goal of the season. He scored off an assist from freshman Connor Holzinger to knot the game at 1-1.

The Tar Heels (8-1-1) took the lead in the 67th minute when Alex Dixon scored to give UNC a 2-1 lead.

The Bulldogs just missed tying the match late in the game when freshman Jake Sides had a shot go just wide in the 89th minute.

Freshman goalkeeper Lassi Hurskainen of UNC Asheville made four saves to keep the Bulldogs close.

Asheville opens up Big South Conference play at home this Saturday afternoon when the Bulldogs host VMI starting at 2 p.m.
