Men's Soccer Rallies Late to Edge VMI, 2-1 in Overtime

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? UNC Asheville scored a goal in the final minutes of regulation and the final minute of the first overtime period to rally past VMI, 2-1 in Big South Conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon.

“I certainly feel for VMI because we have lost matches like that over the past few years,” stated UNC Asheville coach Steve Cornish. “VMI is much better than its record shows and is going to be a handful the rest of the year.
“However, I'm very proud of our lads today to find a way to win,” added Cornish. “Even when we got down late, we never panicked and kept pressing. Every win is important and this is a great result for us to get.
UNC Asheville controlled play most of the way but simply could not score. The Bulldogs out-shot the Keydets 6-1 in the first half.
VMI began to show some life on offense midway through the second half and created a corner kick. On the corner kick by Ayao Sossou,
The Bulldogs kept pressing and had some chances in the final five minutes of regulation but either misfired on a shot or VMI knocked the ball away.
The Bulldogs were the aggressor in overtime but once again could not score.
