Men's Soccer Rallies Late to Edge VMI, 2-1 in Overtime

10.04.2008 | Men's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? UNC Asheville scored a goal in the final minutes of regulation and the final minute of the first overtime period to rally past VMI, 2-1 in Big South Conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (3-4-2) trailed 1-0 before tying the match in the 88th minute and then won the game in 99th minute on a goal from Patrick Tate. A hard-luck VMI team lost its second straight overtime league match to remain winless on the year at 0-8-0 and 0-2-0.

“I certainly feel for VMI because we have lost matches like that over the past few years,” stated UNC Asheville coach Steve Cornish. “VMI is much better than its record shows and is going to be a handful the rest of the year.

“However, I'm very proud of our lads today to find a way to win,” added Cornish. “Even when we got down late, we never panicked and kept pressing. Every win is important and this is a great result for us to get.

UNC Asheville controlled play most of the way but simply could not score. The Bulldogs out-shot the Keydets 6-1 in the first half.

VMI began to show some life on offense midway through the second half and created a corner kick. On the corner kick by Ayao Sossou, Asheville goalkeeper Lassi Hurskainen came out to get the ball. He let the ball go through his hands and into the goal area. Barrett Lukhoj of VMI was right there and tapped the ball into the goal for a 1-0 Keydet lead at the 71:41 mark.

The Bulldogs kept pressing and had some chances in the final five minutes of regulation but either misfired on a shot or VMI knocked the ball away.

Asheville was awarded a corner kick in the 88th minute and the Bulldogs were rewarded. The ball was sent into the box and Caleb Alexander picked up the loose ball and sent a pass to Alex Morrow. Morrow then fired from five yards out and scored to knot the game at 1-1 at 88:36.

The Bulldogs were the aggressor in overtime but once again could not score. Asheville earned a corner kick with less than a minute to go in the period and got the winning score. Alex Morrow's corner kick was placed perfect to Patrick Tate. Tate hit a shot from 10 yards with 24 seconds left in overtime to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 victory.

Asheville out-shot VMI, 14-6 and had 10 corner kicks to three for the Keydets.

The Bulldogs play at Presbyterian Tuesday night at 7 p.m. VMI plays at Howard Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
