ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? The UNC Asheville women's soccer team returns to Greenwood Field on Wednesday to host defending Big South Conference champion High Point starting at 4 p.m. The match will be video-streamed for a small fee and can be watched at either www.bigsouthsports.com or www.uncabulldogs.com. Admission is free.
The Bulldogs (4-6-1, 2-0-0 BSC) are coming off a dramatic victory on Saturday night at Winthrop. Senior forward Robyn Busha scored early in the second overtime period to give Asheville a 1-0 victory. It was the Bulldogs fourth win in their last five matches.
“We played pretty well at Winthrop,” commented UNC Asheville coach Michele Cornish. “I was very proud of the way we held our composure and found a way to win against a good team on the road.”
Cornish knows Asheville faces a challenge with High Point. The Panthers knocked the Bulldogs off twice last year, including a 1-0 victory in the semifinals of the Big South Conference Tournament. HPU is 4-2-4 this season and Wednesday's match is the conference opener for the Panthers. Sara Rager leads the High Point attack with three goals, six assists for 12 points.
“High Point is a very good team and is very explosive offensively,” stated Cornish. “We are going to have to play very well in the back to have a chance at getting a result. We've played well recently but are going to need to play even better on Wednesday.”
Busha leads Asheville in goals scored with four, while junior McKenna Stockhausen has two goals and four assists for eight points. Junior goalkeeper Veronica Lazar earned her second shutout of the year against Winthrop on Saturday.
