“We were fortunate to win after losing a 2-0 lead,” stated UNC Asheville coach Steve Cornish. “However, I was proud of our lads not to hang our heads and to stay on the attack. That was a great goal by Ryan Haupt.
“We played very well at times, especially in the second half,” added Cornish. “I thought we did a good job controlling the match in the second half against a very good Longwood squad. Give Longwood credit for never giving up and to keep battling.”
The game was scoreless in the first half as Longwood controlled much of the opening half as they took the first five shots of the half. The Bulldogs began to play a little better and began to get control when Longwood goalkeeper Joel Hemick was issued a red card at 28:12 forcing the Lancers to play the rest of the game a man short. Avery Makel replaced Hemick.
The first half ended scoreless but
The Bulldogs kept the pressure up and increased the lead to 2-0 on another goal from a freshman. Alex Morrow sent a perfect pass into the goal area and Bryan George headed the ball into the goal for a 2-0
However, the Lancers suddenly came to life in the 84th minute. A shot by Kevin Chico was stopped by Bulldog goalkeeper Lassi Hurskainen but the rebound went right to Harvey Headley who scored to cut the lead to 2-1 at 84:17.
Longwood wasn't finished as it kept the pressure up. The Bulldogs were called for a foul in the 86th minute. Lancer defender Martin Vickerton surprised
The Bulldogs out-shot the Lancers, 14-10 and had a 10-4 advantage in the second half.
