Men's Soccer Slips by Longwood 3-2 on Goal from Ryan Haupt

09.16.2008 | Men's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Ryan Haupt's goal with 42 seconds left gave UNC Asheville a 3-2 win over Longwood Tuesday afternoon at Greenwood Field.

The goal ended a dramatic Lancer (2-3-1) comeback that saw the visitors score two quick goals to tie the match at 2-2.

The winning goal came when the Bulldogs (1-2-1) were on the attack inside the final minute. Longwood was called for a foul just outside the box and Asheville was awarded a free kick. Haupt buried his first goal of the year on the free kick at 89:18 to give the Bulldogs the winning goal.

“We were fortunate to win after losing a 2-0 lead,” stated UNC Asheville coach Steve Cornish. “However, I was proud of our lads not to hang our heads and to stay on the attack.  That was a great goal by Ryan Haupt.

“We played very well at times, especially in the second half,” added Cornish. “I thought we did a good job controlling the match in the second half against a very good Longwood squad. Give Longwood credit for never giving up and to keep battling.”

The game was scoreless in the first half as Longwood controlled much of the opening half as they took the first five shots of the half. The Bulldogs began to play a little better and began to get control when Longwood goalkeeper Joel Hemick was issued a red card at 28:12 forcing the Lancers to play the rest of the game a man short. Avery Makel replaced Hemick.

The first half ended scoreless but Asheville quickly took charge in the second half as it just missed scoring on its first three shots of the half. Finally, the Bulldogs got on the board when freshman Jakes Sides scored his first career goal on a tap-in from five yards out at 60:19 for a 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs kept the pressure up and increased the lead to 2-0 on another goal from a freshman. Alex Morrow sent a perfect pass into the goal area and Bryan George headed the ball into the goal for a 2-0 Asheville lead at 76:26.

Asheville still seemed in control and just missed adding to the lead several times. Longwood did not record a shot until the 84th minute.

However, the Lancers suddenly came to life in the 84th minute. A shot by Kevin Chico was stopped by Bulldog goalkeeper Lassi Hurskainen but the rebound went right to Harvey Headley who scored to cut the lead to 2-1 at 84:17.

Longwood wasn't finished as it kept the pressure up. The Bulldogs were called for a foul in the 86th minute. Lancer defender Martin Vickerton surprised Asheville with a quick kick and the ball went into the net from 20 yards out to knot the match at 2-2 at 86:11.

The Bulldogs out-shot the Lancers, 14-10 and had a 10-4 advantage in the second half.

UNC Asheville plays next at Belmont Friday afternoon starting at 5 p.m. CST.
