Women's Home Soccer Match vs. Clemson Cancelled

Women's Soccer Edged by ETSU, 1-0

08.24.2008 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Jordan Monty scored eight minutes into the match and that goal would be the difference as East Tennessee State edged UNC Asheville, 1-0 in collegiate women's soccer action at Greenwood Field Sunday afternoon.

The win by the Lady Bucs (1-0-0) was their first ever over the Bulldogs at Greenwood Field in five tries.

The Bulldogs (0-1-0) rebounded from the early goal and had chances to tie but could not put the ball past freshman goalkeeper Megan Masch. She made five saves in the match.

“We played better as the match went on but had chances to score and didn't do it,” commented UNC Asheville coach Michele Cornish. “Our freshmen did a nice job for the most part. We'll get better as the season goes on.”

Monty took advantage of a giveaway in the Bulldog end to score the decisive goal. She picked up the ball and then blasted a shot from 10 yards out at the 8-minute mark for a 1-0 ETSU lead.

The Lady Bucs controlled play over the next 15 minutes and came close to scoring again but Asheville goalkeeper Mackenzie Gilmore made some nice saves to keep the game close.

Asheville began to take control of play in the second half but just could not get the equalizer. Robyn Busha had a header with 35 seconds left that just went wide of the Buccaneer goal.

ETSU had a slight edge in shots, 10-8. The Bulldogs had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Asheville plays next at Clemson on Sunday, Aug. 31 starting at 2 p.m.
