Women's Soccer Begins Practice for 2008 Season

08.11.2008 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? The UNC Asheville women's soccer team has opened practice for the 2008 season.

The Bulldogs went an uncharacteristic 4-14 last year as injuries from start to finish slowed UNC Asheville down.  Prior to last season, the Bulldog program had celebrated five straight winning seasons, four trips to the Big South title game, two Big South Conference regular-season titles and one trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Michele Cornish, the winningest coach in Big South Conference history, is looking for her 2008 team to get back to their winning ways.

“Last year was a tough one to go through,” stated Cornish. “We had some injuries but we simply could not get untracked. We're looking forward to doing much better this season.”

UNC Asheville returns some talented players in 2008. Start with senior forward Robyn Busha. The Michigan native enters the upcoming season fifth on the school's all-time goal-scoring list 28 goals. She has been an all-conference performer for three straight years and should make a run at Big South Player of the Year honors in her senior season.

Senior midfielder Juliana Duncan is one of the best in the Big South and will be one of Asheville's leaders this season.

The Bulldogs also return junior goalkeeper Veronica Lazar, forwards McKenna Stockhausen and Katy Beeler plus defender Keri Skelton to give Asheville an experienced team back.

Some freshmen to watch out for include goalkeeper Mackenzie Gilmore, midfielders Mary Beale, Leilani Halkiotis, Carolyn O'Brien, forward Bethany Teague and defender Mary Kate Tucker.

Asheville plays an exhibition game at Mars Hill this Saturday afternoon starting at 3 p.m.

The Bulldogs play six home matches this year and open the 2008 season at Greenwood Field against East Tennessee State on Sunday, August 24 at 2 p.m. Admission to all soccer matches at Greenwood Field is free.
