DeRatt Named Big South Pitcher of the Week

DeRatt Named on Wallace Award Top 100

05.28.2008 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? UNC Asheville starting pitcher Alan DeRatt is among 100 finalists for the Wallace Award, which goes to the top collegiate baseball player in the nation.

DeRatt, the Big South Pitcher of the Year, led the conference with a 1.74 earned run average and ranks among the national leaders in the category.  He finished second in the conference with an 8-2 record.  He has held opposing batters to a Conference-best .210 batting average, and ranks second in innings pitched (98.0).  DeRatt also ranks among the Big South pitching leaders in strikeouts (7th, 68), complete games (T-1st, 3), and games started (1st, 14).  He also tallied one shutout and combined on three others.  At one point during the 2008 season, DeRatt was the national leader in ERA.  He also was the first UNC Asheville pitcher ever to begin a season 6-0, allowed just two home runs in 347 at-bats and did not allow a run in his first 24 innings this year.

The selection committee will narrow the "Wallace Watch" throughout the remainder of the season and the three Wallace Award finalists will be announced following NCAA Super Regional play. Along with their head coaches and parents, the finalists will be invited to Lubbock from July 2-4 to participate in the College Baseball Foundation's "Past Meets Present" celebration of college baseball. The 2008 College Baseball Hall of Fame Inductees will also be present for the three days of festivities.

The Wallace Award is a dedication to the memory of the former Texas Tech player and assistant coach Brooks Wallace. Wallace was a slick-fielding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977 to 1980. A four-year starter, he was named All-Southwest Conference and All-District his senior year.
