04.21.2008 | Track and Field

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The UNC Asheville men's and women's Track and Field squads competed in the Big South Conference championships this past weekend at the Winthrop Track and Field Complex.

The big highlight of the meet came from Erik Nabi. The senior finished in fifth place in the javelin with a throw of 55.48 meters. Nabi, a native of East Amherst, N.Y., played baseball for the Bulldogs for three years before joining the track and field program last spring. He has been one of UNC Asheville's most consistent performers this year in the javelin.

Also scoring points for the Bulldogs this past weekend was senior Omar Ahmad. The Asheville native placed sixth in the triple jump at 13.58 meters. Ahmad had a leap of 6.32 meters in the long jump.

Andrew Burnette battled hard in the 800 meters and picked up a seventh-place finish with a time of 1:56. Jon Harmon took seventh in the 1500 meters at 15:12.

The Bulldogs had Dane Corriher and Duane Stepp competing in the 400 meters. Corriher finished with a time of 51.60, while Stepp had a time of 53.22.

Daniel Bandoly ran a time of 11.57 in the 100 meters. Senior Brandon Hamilton finished at a time of 56.38 in the 400 Hurdles.

Daniel Corriher had a busy weekend in the throws. He competed in the hammer throw (40.87), discus (33.00) and in the shot put (13.03).

Adam Matthews ran 10:23 in the 3000 Steeplechase.

On the women's side, Elizabeth Duncan placed seventh in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:50. Corrie Trotter came in eighth in the high jump with a leap of 1.57 meters.

Katie Olert competed in the 800 meters at a time of 2:23. Morgan Weeks threw the javelin and top throw was at 24.41 meters.

“We had a lot of injuries this year and had some of our top people out who would have competed for all-conference honors,” stated first-year coach Jesse Norman. “We got a great effort from everyone who competed this weekend.

“Our programs are only going to get better,” added Norman.
