Track and Field Teams Open Season Saturday at Appalachian State

Track and Field Teams Have Good Meet at 49er Relays

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? The UNC Asheville men's and women's Track and Field competed at the 49er Relays on the campus of UNC Asheville this weekend and posted some very good results.

 

“I was very pleased with our results this weekend at Charlotte,” commented first-year coach Jesse Norman. “We had some great efforts from a lot of different people and we're only going to get better. This was a good meet for our program.”

 

One of the biggest highlights of the weekend was in the 800 meters where Andrew Burnette set a new PR with a time of 1:55. He finished eighth in the even that had over 50 runners competing. Matt Holman (2:01) and Adam Matthews (2:05) ran strong in the 800 meters, as well.

 

Matthews also competed in the 1500 and had a time of 4:13.

 

On the women's side, the Bulldogs had good work in the 1500 meters. Elizabeth Duncan finished second in her flight with a time of 4:52. Katie Olert (5:21), Emily Becker (5:21) and Katherine Clark (5:31) all had PR's this weekend in the 1500.

 

Olert won her flight in the 800 meters and finished with a time of 2:22. Duncan wasn't too far behind at 2:26. Ingrid Allstaedt also ran a 2:26 in the 800.

 

A big highlight for Asheville in the field events was from senior Erik Nabi in the Javelin. He won his flight with a toss of 51.12 meters and finished 12th overall.

 

Omar Ahmad finished 13th against strong fields in both the long jump (6.37 meters) and triple jump (13.31).

 

Corrie Trotter had a strong day with a seventh-place finish in the high jump (1.55). She had a 4.67 leap in the long jump. Morgan Weeks also competed in the long jump (4.56) and javelin (25.25).

 

Daniel Corriher had good results in the hammer throw (40.54) and shot put (13.28).  He also competed in the discus (39.28). Freshman Simon Haake had a throw of 31.10 meters in the discus.

 

“We're making progress and that's all you can ask for,” stated Norman. “We just want to keep getting better with each meet and then have a great Big South meet.”
