Shepard Records Fifth Double-Double; Dogs Fall at Coastal

CONWAY, S.C.? Stacy Shepard recorded her fifth double-double of the season and her second against Coastal Carolina but UNC Asheville could not overcome shooting 26 percent from the floor in a 54-36 loss on Wednesday night.
Shepard finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds while Ashton Barton and Ana Baker each scored 10 points for the Bulldogs who fall to 10-14 on the season and 1-6 in the Big South
Coastal Carolina (15-7, 3-4 Big South) was led by the tandem of Vicky Blanchard and Amanda Stull who each finished with 14 points.
Barton scored the first eight points of the game for Asheville as the Bulldogs had their largest lead of six points on three different occasions. The last, a 21-15 lead at the 5:26 mark of the first half.
Blanchard had a personal 5-0 run to pull Coastal to within one and Stull hit a jumper in the lane to give CCU its first lead 22-21 with 2:38 left in the half. Chioma Okoli knocked down a pair of free throws to put Asheville back up one with 2:21 left but Blanchard converted to give CCU a 24-23 lead at halftime.
Coastal never trailed in the second half using a 16-6 run to start the second session to build it largest lead at 40-29 with 11:36 left to play. Asheville responded with a 10-2 run to pull to 42-39 with 6:59 left but the Dogs could not get any closer. CCU hit 8-of-10 free throws including six in a row down the stretch.
Asheville will take a week off before wrapping up its three-game road trip at High Point next Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m.
