Volleyball Stays Hot With Victory over Radford

11.08.2008 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? UNC Asheville volleyball coach Julie Torbett earned her 100th Big South Conference victory as the Bulldogs earned a hard-fought 3-1 win over visiting Radford at Justice Center Saturday afternoon. UNC Asheville won the match 25-18, 21-25, 25-23, 25-22.

The homestanding Bulldogs were led by Kelsey Benorden with 16 kills, while freshman Cindi Miller added 14. Raquel Miotto had a match-high 22 digs. The junior libero moved into third place on the Big South career list for digs and now has 1,851 digs, moving past Carrie O'Connell at Charleston Southern (1,833).

Torbett improved her Big South Conference record to 100-85. She is the league's all-time winningest coach in BSC play and becomes the first volleyball coach in league play to ever win 100 conference matches.

Radford was led by Melinda Clelland with 16 kills. Laura Waddell finished with 12 kills. Jessica Sullivan had 11 kills. Katelyn Meeks sparked the defense with 19 digs. Setter Kiley Kent had 51 assists and 18 digs.

The win was UNC Asheville's fifth straight and improved its overall record to 15-11 and 7-6 in the Big South Conference. The Bulldogs have won seven of their last eight matches. The Highlanders fell to 9-17 overall and 4-11 in the BSC.

Coming off an emotional win over Big South-leading Liberty on Friday night, Torbett was glad the Bulldogs were able to get the victory over a Radford squad that beat Asheville in four games last month.

“We didn't play as well as we did last night but we found a way to win and get key points when we absolutely had to have them,” commented Torbett. “Radford made us earn everything today. They did a good job making things tough for us.”

Asheville struggled early in the first set but came on strong in the last part of the set to win going away 25-18. Miller had four kills in the opening set. The Bulldogs hit .412 in the first set.

The second set was back and forth before the Bulldogs made a late surge to go up 21-19. But the Highlanders, led by Clelland, scored the next five points to grab a 24-21 lead. Clelland had three kills in the run. A kill from Miller cut the lead to 24-22 but a service error by Asheville gave the set to Radford, 25-22.

In the third set, the Highlanders took charge early and got great production from Waddell and Sullivan to take an 18-12 lead. The Bulldogs got back in the set behind the serving of Benorden. She led a 5-0 Asheville run that featured kills from Miller and Rachel Olivio to cut the lead 18-17. The match was tied at 23-23 before the Bulldogs got two kills from Miller to win the third set, 25-23.

The fourth set was close before a 5-1 Asheville run got the Bulldogs some breathing room at 21-16. Jenna Dover helped spark the run with three kills.  Radford slowly came behind kills from Megan McWhorter to get within 23-21. But a block from Heather Burns and another kill from Miller allowed the Bulldogs to win the set and match, 25-22.
