ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Sophilia Hipps and Jenell Moore scored 14 points each as South Carolina State held off UNC Asheville, 67-64 at Justice Center Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Bulldogs of S.C. State (1-3) led by seven with 3:21 to go but had to hold off a dramatic Asheville comeback in the final three minutes. The home team had a chance to take the lead and tie the game in the final 30 seconds but just could not get a shot to drop.

UNC Asheville (1-5) was led by Jessica Monroe's season-high 18 points. She also pulled down eight rebounds. Chioma Okoli finished with 15 points. Ana Baker had eight points, seven assists and three steals.

SCSU had LaKeisha Scott contribute 12 points. Moore went 7-of-8 from the field and collected seven rebounds.

The visitors trailed 52-49 with 10 minutes remaining before going on a 13-3 run to race to a 62-55 lead. Six different players scored for the Lady Bulldogs during the run and it was Lateia Brailey's three-pointer with the shot clock winding down gave SCSU the lead for good at 58-56.

Asheville battled back behind Monroe. She scored the Bulldogs next seven points to cut the lead to 65-62 at the 1:16 mark.

The home team forced a turnover and got two free throws from Baker with 38 seconds left to narrow the lead to 65-64.

The Bulldogs got the ball back after a missed SCSU free throw and had a chance to take the lead. Okoli had a five-footer that just fell short, and Hipps claimed the rebound and was fouled. She hit both free throws with 10 seconds remaining to give the Lady Bulldogs a 67-64 lead.

Asheville got a good look to tie as Baker sprung open for a three-pointer. Her shot was short, and SCSU was able to get the victory.

The Lady Bulldogs shot 59 percent in the victory (28-of-47) but had 25 turnovers. Asheville shot 36 percent (24-of-66) from the field.

UNC Asheville plays next at home against mountain rival Western Carolina at Justice Center Tuesday night starting at 7 p.m.
