Cold Shooting Dogs Fall at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C.?Chioma Okoli scored nine points and Kendall Shepard scored eight points as UNC Asheville shot just 19 percent from the floor in a 71-30 loss at Furman on Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs (0-3) suffered through their lowest point production since a 67-30 loss at Birmingham-Southern during the 2002-03 season which was head coach Betsy Blose's first year at Asheville.
Furman (2-0) fresh off a victory over Clemson jumped out to a 17-2 lead and was never threatened in the game. The Paladins placed three players in double figures led by Lee Stephens who had a game-high 17 points. Kali Holtfreter and Melissa Liebschwager each had 16 points.
Furman shot 65 percent in the first half to take a 45-17 lead into halftime. Asheville's second half troubles continued for the third straight game as the Dogs made just three baskets in the second half shooting 11.1 percent from the floor after halftime. Asheville has scored fewer points in the second half than it had in the first half in all three games this season.
Ipek Derici led the Bulldogs with seven rebounds. Furman held a 44-35 rebounding advantage in the game while forcing the Dogs into 24 turnovers. Asheville is 0-3 for the first time since the 2004-05 season when it started 0-4 but came back to finish the season 18-12.
Asheville will travel to Georgia Southern for a 3 p.m. game on Saturday.
