Women's Soccer Wins Scrimmage 2-0

CONWAY, S.C. ? Ashleigh Gunning scored in the 72nd minute to give Coastal Carolina a hard-fought 3-2 Big South Conference home victory over UNC Asheville Tuesday afternoon.

 

The Bulldogs (5-8-1, 3-2-0) trailed 2-0 at halftime but roared back in the second half to tie the match at 2-2 behind goals from McKenna Stockhausen and Robyn Busha.

 

Gunning's goal gave the Chanticleers their eighth straight victory and improved their record to 8-3-0 and kept them perfect in Big South play at 4-0-0.

 

CCU opened the scoring when Blair Monroe scored off a rebound for a 1-0 Chanticleer lead in the 21st minute.

 

The home team made it 2-0 the 34th minute as junior Dana Gentile took a pass from classmate Sarah McPartlan and shot in the right corner for her second goal of the season.

 

The Bulldogs regrouped at halftime and quickly made a game of it. UNC Asheville cut into the Chanticleer lead at 57:36 as McKenna Stockhausen took a free kick from Juliana Duncan and beat sophomore Karen Pavlick for her fourth goal of the year. Asheville kept the pressure on and tied the game at 61:13 as Robyn Busha's shot from 15 yards out went in the left side of the goal. Her goal was assisted by Stockhausen.

 

Coastal Carolina outshot UNC Asheville 23-8 and enjoyed a 3-1 corner-kick advantage. Pavlick had one save for the win in her first start of the season in goal. Lazar made nine saves for the Bulldogs. Gunning took five shots to lead the Chants, while Lindsey Bragg had three shots for Asheville.

 

The Bulldogs play next at Big South Conference rival Liberty Saturday night at 7 p.m.
