Women's Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision to VMI

10.21.2008 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Megan Strand scored late in the first half and was enough as VMI edged UNC Asheville, 1-0 in Big South Conference women's soccer action at Greenwood Field Tuesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (5-10, 3-4-0 BSC) out-shot the Keydets (17-13) but could not get on the scoreboard. Asheville had two great chances in the first half but had a goal wiped away due to an off-sides call and another certain goal was knocked off the line by a VMI defender.

“This is a tough one to lose but give VMI credit for scoring on its opportunity,” commented UNC Asheville coach Michele Cornish. “We had some opportunities but just couldn't score. We congratulate VMI on the win. They have done a great job this year.”

VMI improved to a school-record 7-7-1 and 4-1-1 in the Big South Conference.

The Bulldogs controlled part of the first half and looked like they had a goal when McKenna Stockhausen scored in 20th minute but the play was quickly ruled off-sides by the linesman. Two minute later, a shot from Robyn Busha looked like it was going into the goal but Celine Ziobro cleared the ball of the line to keep the game scorless.

The Keydets dominated the final 10 minutes of the half and got on the board with a three-shot sequence. Freshman forward Olivia Moore got loose in the box and had two quick shots. She had one that was blocked with the second being saved by Veronica Lazar. However, the rebound went straight to Strand who scored from two yards for a 1-0 VMI lead at the 43:25 mark.

The Bulldogs controlled much of the second half as they had 12 shots to just five for VMI. Busha has seven shots in the second half but simply could not score. Beemer finished the match with seven saves.

UNC Asheville plays at Charleston Southern on Saturday at 1 p.m. VMI travels to Coastal Carolina Friday night for a 6 p.m. match.
