Volleyball Edges Charleston Southern in Thriller

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Kelsey Benorden had 20 kills and Heather Burns added 16 kills as UNC Asheville outlasted Charleston Southern 3-2 in Big South Conference Volleyball action Friday night. The Bulldogs won the thriller 26-24, 23-25, 25-22, 22-25, 16-14.

 

The match was close from start to finish but UNC Asheville was able to get the final two points of the fifth set to earn its second straight win.

 

“This was a great match and a super victory,” commented UNC Asheville coach Julie Torbett. “Charleston Southern is a very good team that has a lot of young talent. This is a match that could have gone either way but we were able to get some big points in the fifth game to get a big win.”

 

Charleston Southern (13-11, 2-5 BSC) was led by Amberle Trinder with 23 kills and five blocks. Trinder played very well in defeat as she hit .500 (23-4-38) for the match. Amanda Hill had 18 kills and 19 digs. Cori Holeman picked up 10 kills. Ashlee Kadatz sparked the CSU defense with 22 digs.

 

Asheville had a great match on defense from Raquel Miotto. She had a career-high 47 digs in the match. Miotto moved into second place on the Bulldog career dig list with 1,679, passing Gina Golkiewicz with 1,674.

 

Freshman Cindi Miller added 12 kills and three blocks. Setter Kaitlyn McDaniel had 62 assists, 13 digs and six kills. Jenna Dover contributed nine kills. Freshman Rachel Olivo added seven kills and four blocks.

 

The Bulldogs play at home Saturday afternoon against Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m. Charleston Southern visits Presbyterian on Saturday.
