Comeback Falls Short; Volleyball loses 3-2

ASHEVILLE, N.C.? Chelsy Kimes had 27 kills and 10 digs to lead Coastal Carolina to a 3-2 volleyball victory over a resilient UNC Asheville team 25-11, 25-17, 32-34, 24-26, 15-10 Saturday afternoon at the Justice Center.
Kelsey Benorden had 18 digs and 16 digs for her 11th double-double of the season to lead Asheville (10-11, 2-6 Big South). Cindi Miller had a season-high 16 kills and hit .419 (16-3-31). Heather Burns had 11 kills and six blocks.
Coastal Carolina (17-7, 6-2 Big South) won the first sets easily using a strong attack and solid defense. The Chanticleers hit .465 over the first two sets while the Bulldogs hit just .185.
The match began to turn in a marathon third set. UNC Asheville saved three match points and on its eighth set point finally won 34-32. The Dogs took another exhausting 26-24 set in the fourth. With the match tied Coastal found its offense in the deciding game hitting .444 on way to the 15-10 win.
“I am very proud of the way we fought today against a very good Coastal team,” said Asheville head coach Julie Torbett. “We could have tuck our tails after the second set but we hung in and forced five sets. I thought our two freshmen, Cindi Miller and Rachel Olivo both played well. I have to lose but I can live with the effort we played with today.”
Amanda Russell had 16 kills and Megan Bickford 15 kills for Coastal. Brett Starbuck had 32 digs to lead the match. Raquel Miotto had 28 digs to pace the Bulldogs defensively.
Coastal hit .306 in the match while Asheville hit .220. The Dogs out-blocked the Chanticleers 8-7.
Asheville will have a week off before traveling to High Point on Saturday for a 2 p.m. match. Coastal will travel to Liberty on Friday night.
