ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Katie Taber scored her first career goal in the 77th minute as High Point downed UNC Asheville 1-0 in women's soccer action at Greenwood Field on a cold and windy Wednesday afternoon.

The Panthers (5-2-4, 1-0-0 BSC) controlled the second half as they out-shot the Bulldogs 10-1. HPU finished the game with a 14-3 shot advantage.

“We simply did not play well today,” declared UNC Asheville coach Michele Cornish. “High Point dominated us from start to finish and deserved to win. We must play better than we did today.”

The winning goal came on a direct kick. Courtney Spotts was about 25 yards away from the goal. She sent a kick perfectly to the goal area where Taber flicked it into the back of the net for a 1-0 Panther lead at the 77:03 mark.

Asheville goalkeeper Veronica Lazar played well in defeat for the Bulldogs. She made five saves to keep the match close.

In the first half, High Point out-shot Asheville, 4-2. The Bulldogs best opportunity to score was when freshman Leilani Halkiotis had a shot go wide late in the first half.

The second half was all High Point from start to finish. Karra Damascus had two shots that just missed scoring.

Asheville had one more opportunity to score when Robyn Busha's header went wide with five minutes left.

The Bulldogs are on the road Saturday afternoon when they play Gardner-Webb at 2 p.m. High Point hosts Winthrop Saturday night at 7 p.m.
