COLUMBIA, S.C.-- UNC Asheville finished the game on a 10-0 run over the final 3:56 to erase a seven-point deficit and give the Bulldogs a 61-58 victory over South Carolina Saturday night at the Colonial Center.
Kenny George led the Bulldogs (11-3) with 16 points and 13 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. K.J. Garland played the full 40 minutes scoring 15 points including the basket that began the 10-0 run to end the game.
Mike Holmes had a tip-in at the 3:56 mark to give South Carolina (8-6) its largest lead of the game 58-51 but that would be the Gamecocks last points.
Garland scored a fast break basket off an assist from Bryan Smithson with 2:55 left to play. George had a blocked shot on the Gamecock's next possession and a dunk on the other end to pull the Dogs within three points. Smithson, who scored a season-low seven points had his biggest basket on a driving lay-up to bring the score to 58-57 with 1:02 to play. After a USC turnover, George got the ball down low for a dunk with 32 seconds left putting Asheville up one. The Gamecocks turned the ball over on their next possession and were forced to foul. Smithson knocked down the final two free throws with six seconds left to make the score 61-58. Devin Downey's three-pointer at the buzzer fell short and the Dogs celebrated their second victory over USC under head coach Eddie Biedenbach.
"We felt like we could play with these guys," said Biedenbach. "We needed a game like this to see how good we can be.The thing I like about this team is that we can get better. Not one time tonight did we not play for each other. Bryan (Smithson) and K.J. (Garland) showed a sense of urgencey and played very well down the stretch. Kenny (George) had a great game. South Carolina is a talented team but we felt we could play with them. Obviously this is a great win for our program."
Downey led the Gamecocks with a game-high 18 points while playing the full 40 minutes. Zam Fredrick had 14 points and Dominique Archie added 10 points for USC.Asheville out rebounded USC 34-30 while shooting 42.6 percent from the floor while holding USC to 38.7 percent from the floor. The game saw only 10 free throws as Asheville went 3-for-5 from the line and USC went 4-for-5 from the stripe.
The Bulldogs will travel to Chapel Hill on Wednesday for a showdown with the No. 1 ranked Tar Heels. The game can be seen on ESPNU or heard live on AM-1310 WISE and uncabulldogs.com at 7 p.m.
