ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? The UNC Asheville women's soccer team heads to the Gardner-Webb Invitational this weekend for a pair of matches against a future Big South Conference opponent and a former league opponent.

The Bulldogs take on future Big South foe Gardner-Webb Friday night at 7 p.m. On Sunday at 1 p.m., UNC Asheville battles former league foe Birmingham-Southern.

Michele Cornish's club battled hard on Wednesday but fell to Western Carolina, 2-1 at Greenwood Field.

“We played well in spots but just didn't do enough to beat a good team like Western Carolina,” admitted Cornish. “However, our kids played very hard and if we keep getting efforts like this then we'll be fine.”

Cornish is looking forward to the tournament this weekend.

“We will have two tough matches at Gardner-Webb,” said Cornish. “Gardner-Webb has always been tough for us. Birmingham-Southern has a solid team once again this year.”

The Bulldogs are 1-1 on the season. Junior forward Robyn Busha has scored a goal and added an assist on the year.

UNC Asheville does not play at home again until it battles Furman on Sept. 20 at Greenwood Field.
