ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Rachel Shompner scored midway through the second half as Western Carolina edged out UNC Asheville, 2-1 in women's college soccer action at Greenwood Field Wednesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (1-1-0) scored the first goal of the match as senior Joy Haynes tallied her first goal of the season in the eighth minute The Lady Catamounts (2-1-0) tied things up on a goal from Arlan White in the 20th minute.

WCU outshot UNC Asheville, 17-10 and had an 11-3 edge in the second half. Asheville goalkeeper Veronica Lazar made nine saves for the Bulldogs. WCU goalkeeper Caitlin Williams made six saves after allowing the early goal by Haynes.

“We got off to a great start but didn't finish well,” commented UNC Asheville coach Michele Cornish. “We had some chances that we needed to finish. However, our effort was very good and we'll get better as the season goes on. Once again, I thought our freshmen played well today.”

With the game tied at 1-1, Lauren Atkinson sent a pass to Shompner who tallied her first goal of the season on a shot from 10 yards out in the 67th minute. The goal gave the Cats their first lead of the day at 2-1.

Asheville opened the scoring in the 8th minute when Robyn Busha sent a perfect pass to Haynes who broke in all alone on the WCU goal. She connected from 12 yards out to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

The Catamounts tied things up 13 minutes later on a throw-in. Nikki Collins threw the ball toward the Asheville goal and the ball was deflected by Whittle into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

The Bulldogs had two great chances to take the lead late in the half as two shots from Busha just missed in the final five minutes of the opening period. Haynes had a semi-breakaway early in the second half but was foiled by Williams.
