Women?s Soccer Falls on Road at Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.? UNC Asheville's women's soccer hit the road for the first time this season and fell 5-1 at Gardner-Webb to open the GWU Classic on Friday night.
Joy Haynes scored her second goal of the season unassisted in the 79th minute but that was all the offense UNC Asheville (1-2) could manage on the night. The Bulldogs have scored one goal in each of their first three games on the season.
Gardner-Webb (2-2) out-shot Asheville 22-8 in the game. Lindsey Gladhill set the tone of match with an unassisted goal in the fifth minute of play. Sarah Keyser added her first tally of the year in the 36th minute to give the home-standing Bulldogs a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Bailey Stevens made the score 3-0 in the 73rd minute. GWU's first three goals each came unassisted.
Haynes' tally made the score 3-1 but GWU added goals by Tiffany Greene in the 83rd minute and Gladhill scored again in the 88th minute to provide the final margin.
Asheville goalkeeper Shanna Brown made nine saves on the night while GWU keeper Sarah Wyszynski was forced to make two saves.
Both teams return to action on Sunday. Gardner-Webb faces Nicholls State at 1 p.m. while UNC Asheville faces former Big South foe Birmingham-Southern at 3 p.m. Birmingham-Southern defeated Nicholls State 3-0 in the first match of the day.
