ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? The UNC Asheville women's soccer team plays mountain rival Western Carolina Wednesday afternoon at Greenwood Field starting at 4 p.m. Admission is free. The game will be televised tape delay by AETV (Channel 16) Wednesday night at 9 p.m.

The Bulldogs opened the season with a 1-0 overtime victory over Tennessee Tech at home on Sunday. Asheville got a goal from Robyn Busha 34 seconds into the first overtime period to collect the win. Freshman Dana Sroka earned an assist on the winning goal.

“Overall, we played pretty well on Sunday,” admitted UNC Asheville coach Michele Cornish. “I thought our defense did a solid job, and we did some good things going forward. However, we had some chances to put the ball into the back of the net and didn't do it.”

UNC Asheville faces a stern test against Western Carolina. The Lady Catamounts are 1-1 on the season after playing two matches on the road this weekend. WCU fell at Wyoming, 1-0 Friday before bouncing back to rip Northern Colorado, 4-0 on Sunday.

WCU has won the last two meetings between the teams, including a 3-0 shutout last year in Cullowhee. The Lady Catamounts won the SoCon in 2005 and advanced to the College Cup.

Western Carolina is a good team that plays very hard,” stated Cornish. “We're going to have to be at our best to have a chance to beat them on Wednesday.”

Busha's goal on Sunday was her 21st career goal and moved her into fifth place on the all-time career goals list.

The Bulldogs are on the road this weekend at the Gardner-Webb Invitational. They'll face Gardner-Webb on Friday and former Big South member Birmingham-Southern on Sunday.
