Volleyball Wins First Match of the Year Over USC Upstate

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville volleyball team finished up with a victory Saturday evening in the UNC Asheville Volleyball Classic. The Bulldogs picked up their first win of the year by outlasting USC Upstate, 3-1. Asheville won the match, 30-27, 30-15, 28-30, 31-29.
The Bulldogs (1-5) battled hard in the match against the Spartans. Freshman Kelsey Benorden had a great match with 22 kills, 18 digs, four service aces and four blocks. Alysha Greer finished with 16 kills, while Lauren Ficker chipped in 10 kills, seven blocks and six digs. Ashley Wrightenberry had nine kills and four blocks. Raquel Miotto contributed 17 digs.
Western Carolina picked up two victories on Saturday en route to capturing the UNC Asheville Volleyball Classic. The Lady Catamounts knocked off USC Upstate 3-0 and Kennesaw State, 3-1 to be the only team unbeaten in the tourney.
The Lady Catamounts were led by tournament MVP Jelena Jakovlijevic. The freshman outside hitter posted 15 kills against USC Upstate and then added 11 kills, five service aces and six digs in the win over KSU. WCU placed three players on the all-tournament team in Meredith Harmon, Katie Hennessey and Jakovlijevic.
WCU won its match with USC Upstate, 30-26, 30-26, 31-29. They went four games with KSU (2-6) as the Lady Cats won, 30-22, 30-14, 22-30, 30-23.
UNC Asheville lost the first match of the day in five games to Kennesaw State, 26-30, 30-25, 30-22, 23-30, 12-15.
