CLARKSVILLE, TENN. ? Austin Peay posted its second straight shutout with a 2-0 win against UNC Asheville, Sunday, at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field. The Lady Govs improve to 2-4 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-5.
Asheville managed 11 shots, with six on goal, but Meredith Smith ? who finished with six saves ? made all the stops at all the right times.
The Lady Govs had 16 shots, with nine on goal. Sophomore Monica Dunham and freshman Samantha Northrop each had three shots to lead the attack.
Dunham was a dart on the pitch all day, always seeming to be in the right place at the right time. At the six-minute mark, senior Tyler Adair lofted a clear from the half line to Dunham just inside the box. The Franklin, Tenn. native, then used the side of her foot to push the ball past the keeper, giving Austin Peay an early 1-0 lead.
At the 34:43 mark, UNC Asheville's Shoshana Fried took advantage of a corner kick and fired a shot into the upper 90. Smith finger-tipped it out of net to maintain the Lady Govs lead.
In the second period, it was Dunham again initiating action. After a shot by Northrop that flew wide, the Lady Govs re-established and moved the ball to the top of
the box. Dunham, playing inside the box, passed out to freshman Kellie Cannon, who fired a shot from 45 yards out for her second goal in as many games, for a 2-0 lead that would stand.
The Bulldogs host Furman Thursday afternoon starting at 4 p.m.
