UNC Asheville Women's Soccer Picked 4th in Preseason Poll
08.13.2007 | Women's Soccer
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's soccer team was picked fourth in the Big South Conference preseason poll that was released today by the league office. The vote was done by the league's head coaches and Sports Information Directors.
Liberty was tapped as the favorite to win the league. The Bulldogs downed the Flames in a penalty kick shootout in last year's Big South title game to claim their second championship and first ever trip to the College Cup. Regular-season champ Winthrop was pegged for second place, followed by Coastal Carolina. UNC Asheville received one first place vote and finished in fourth place. The rest of the poll went with High Point, Radford, Charleston Southern and VMI.
Winthrop goalkeeper Dimitra Poulos was named as the Preseason Player of the Year. Junior forward Robyn Busha of UNC Asheville was third in the voting for Preseason Player of the Year.
"It is about where I thought we would get picked," stated UNC Asheville head coach Michele Cornish. "Pre-season polls are simply something to talk about. We will just have to see how the season plays out and then what happens in the conference tournament. Our league is very balanced and any team can win it this year."
UNC Asheville opens practice on Tuesday and plays an exhibition game with Mars Hill at Greenwood Field Saturday afternoon starting at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
