ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Nine home matches plus a tournament at Gardner-Webb highlights the 2007 UNC Asheville women's soccer schedule. The schedule was announced by head coach Michele Cornish this afternoon.
The defending Big South Conference champions will begin the season with two home matches and end the year with a home contest at Greenwood Field. The nine home matches are the most played by the Bulldogs since the 1995 season.
"We're very happy to be home for so many matches this season," declared Asheville head coach Michele Cornish. "We're looking forward to playing in front of our home fans.
"Our schedule is very competitive," added Cornish. "We will have some tough challenges in non-conference play but those matches should prepare us for the Big South Conference."
Asheville opens the 2007 season against Tennessee Tech at Greenwood Field on Sept. 2 before hosting mountain rival Western Carolina on Sept. 5.
The Bulldogs then head down the road to Gardner-Webb where they will participate in the Gardner-Webb Invitational. Asheville takes on the host school in the first match (Sept. 7) and then takes on former Big South rival Birmingham-Southern two days (Sept. 9) later.
Asheville continues its road matches with a trip to Appalachian State (Sept. 11) and a first-time visit to Austin Peay (Sept. 16).
The Bulldogs return home for four straight contests as they'll take on Southern Conference juggernaut Furman (Sept. 20), a first ever meeting with Chattanooga (Sept. 23), Francis Marion (Sept. 26) and then opening league play against Coastal Carolina (Oct. 6).
Asheville plays just league foes the rest of the regular season as it'll visit Radford (Oct. 13) before hosting Winthrop (Oct. 17) and Charleston Southern (Oct. 20). The Bulldogs are back on the road at High Point (Oct. 24) and VMI (Oct. 28). Asheville completes the regular season with a match against Liberty (Oct. 31). The match with the Flames will be a rematch of the last two Big South Conference championship matches.
"We're excited about defending our championship," said Cornish. "We know it won't be easy as the Big South is a very balanced league from top to bottom. The key for us will be to stay away from injuries and be playing our best soccer at the end of the season."
The Bulldogs welcome back eight starters and 17 letterwinners from last year's squad that finished 10-7-3. Asheville participated in the NCAA College Cup for the first time in school history after winning its second ever Big South Conference Tournament.
