BOONE, N.C.-- John Hillman scored in the 86th minute off an assist from Patrick Tate to lift UNC Asheville to a 2-1 victory over Appalachian State Sunday afternoon.
UNC Asheville improved to 3-11-1 with all three wins coming by one goal. Appalachian State ends the regular season at 6-9-3.
The Mountaineers owned the run of play taking 20 shots to the Bulldog's eight. In the first half, the Mountaineers put seven shots on target while UNC Asheville failed to record a shot on goal.
Appalachian opened the scoring in the 61st minute with Juan Obregon bulging the net from 18-yards. Obregon's fourth goal of the season was assisted by Arie Muniz.
The Bulldogs answered only six minutes later with a goal of their own from Scott Szymanski. The Asheville striker converted a 35-yard free kick for his seventh goal of the season.
Just as overtime seemed the only logical conclusion, UNC Asheville took their first lead of the match in the 86th minute. John Hillman scored the game-winning goal from eight yards out. Patrick Tate earned the assist as he delivered the free kick into the box.
Asheville will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday as it returns home for Senior Day against Gardner-Webb. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m.
