Women Open UNCG Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday

ASHEVILLE, N.C.?The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will make its first road trip of the year to complete in the UNC Greensboro Thanksgiving Tournament this weekend in Greensboro.

 

The Bulldogs are 3-1 coming off a 79-67 victory over Furman on Tuesday night and will face North Carolina A&T in their first game on Friday at 3 p.m. The game can be heard in the Asheville area on AM-1310 WISE and online at www.uncabulldogs.com.

 

Ashton Barton is the leading Asheville in points averaging 17.3 per game. She had 22 points in the victory over Furman tying a school record with six made three-pointers in the game. Ana Baker is this week's Big South Player of the Week. She is averaging 10 points, 7.8 assists, five rebounds, and five steals per game. Chioma Okoli, Jessica Monroe, and Lindsey Montgomery are all averaging over nine points per game for the Dogs who have scored in the 70s in three of their four games.

 

North Carolina A&T is 2-1 on the season with wins over Stetson and Elon and a loss to Liberty. A&T is coming off a 53-46 win at Elon in which head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs earned her 399th career win. She will soon become the 38th coach to win 400 games and the second to do it at a historically black college. Ta'Wauana Cook had 16 points and Amber Bland had 10 points to help the Aggies overcome a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat Elon. A&T beat Asheville last season 63-59.

 

UNC Greensboro has faced a challenging schedule with losses at NC State and Duke sandwiched around a home loss to Liberty. UNCG is averaging just 37.9 points per game led by Monique Floyd and Gini Grimsley who are each averaging five points per game.

 

Boston University is 3-1 on the season with five players averaging in double figures. Kasey Devine leads the way at 15 ppg. Aly Hinton is at 13 ppg, Jesyka Burks-Wiley adds 12.8 points, Cheri Raffo 11 points, and Christine Kinneary is at 10.5 points per game. As a team, the Terriers are shooting 86 percent from the free-throw line.

 

The Bulldogs are 5-2 all-time against North Carolina A&T and just 1-13 all-time against UNC Greensboro. The Dogs have never played Boston University.

 

The consolation game will be played at 1 p.m. on Saturday with the championship game to be played at 3 p.m. UNC Asheville's second game of the tournament can be heard online at uncabulldogs.com.
