LYNCHBURG, - Kelsey Benorden had a school-record 34 kills as sixth-seeded UNC Asheville downed third-seeded High Point in five games in the quarterfinals of the Big South Conference Volleyball Tournament Thursday afternoon at the Vines Center. The Bulldogs won the match, 25-30, 31-29, 30-27, 23-30, 15-10.

UNC Asheville (12-21) advanced to the semifinals for the sixth straight year and will take on second-seeded Winthrop at 4:30 p.m.

“It was an up-and-down match but we found a way to win, and I couldn't be prouder of our team for beating a very good High Point team this afternoon,” said Bulldog coach Julie Torbett.

The Panthers (24-9) controlled the offense early and held off a couple late UNC Asheville runs to pick off the 30-25 win in game one.  Game two was back and forth with both teams battling hard.  The game featured a number of ties with UNC Asheville taking control to snatch the 31-29 win.  Game three was another back and forth game.  With the game knotted at 25-25, the Bulldogs took control on offense and pushed to the 30-27 win.  In game four, High Point jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and held off another late UNCA run to pick up the 30-23 win and force a fifth game.

In game five, UNC Asheville jumped on top early and dictated the offense to come away with the 15-10 win.

Benorden's 34 kills also set a Vines Center record, besting the previous record of 31.  Alysha Greer joined Benorden in double-digit kills with 18.  Rachel Guinane posted her fifth 50-plus assist match on the season with 52 helpers in the match.  Raquel Miotto led the back row with 25 digs, her 14th 20-dig match on the year.

“Kelsey was just phenomenal,” stated Torbett. “Our team did a great job rallying around her and getting her the ball. She had a sensational match and that's the best I've ever seen her play.”

Torbett pointed to the Bulldogs winning the second game 31-29 as the key game.

“If we don't win game two then we're packing right now and going home,” admitted Torbett. “It was tied 29-29 and we were able to get the points to get some momentum in the match.”

Ashley Wrightenberry had six block assists and is now the school's all-time leader in that category with 345.
