ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Maggie Woody scored midway through the second half as Liberty edged UNC Asheville, 2-1 in Big South Conference women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Greenwood Field.

The Lady Flames (6-10-0, 3-4-0) trailed 1-0 early in the match but fought back with a goal in the first half and Woody's game-winner to pick up the victory.

It was another hard-luck loss for the Bulldogs (3-13-0, 1-6-0 BSC). Asheville dominated the first half as it out-shot LU, 9-4 and missed on numerous opportunities to build on its 1-0 lead.  Four of the Bulldogs six league losses have been by one goal.

The match was tied 1-1 in the 63rd minute when the Bulldogs were called for a foul 20 yards away from their goal. Wood, a sophomore midfielder, was asked to take the direct kick. The Asheville native hit her shot that bounced off the cross bar into the back of the net for her second goal of the season and a 2-1 Flames' lead at the 63:23 mark.

Liberty controlled play for most of the second half only to see the Bulldogs create some chances late in the match. Robyn Busha just missed on two headers in the final two minutes.

“We had our chances but just didn't score enough to win today,” stated UNC Asheville coach Michele Cornish. “This game typifies the season we've had and it's been very frustrating. We played pretty well at times but you have to score on your opportunities.”

Busha opened the scoring in the match when she scored at the 13:10 mark off a feed from Meagan Bradham.

It stayed 1-0 as the Bulldogs peppered the Liberty goal. LU goalkeeper Lauren Kamphuis made three saves to keep Asheville from scoring again.

The Flames then tied the match at 31:50 when Rachel Hetrick scored her first goal of the year on a 15-yard shot off an assist from Hope West.

The Bulldogs were able to get the final three shots of the first half and just missed scoring when Busha hit a shot from 10 yards out that slipped past the left goal-post and went wide.

UNC Asheville plays again next week in the first round of the Big South Conference Tournament against an opponent yet to be determined. The Bulldogs play on Thursday (Nov. 8) at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, S.C. Liberty hosts South Dakota State this Saturday afternoon.
