Women's Soccer Edged by Winthrop, 1-0

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Sophomore defender Caly Cassidy scored the only goal of the game in the 64^th minute as Winthrop edged UNC Asheville, 1-0 in Big South Conference women's soccer action at Greenwood Field Wednesday afternoon.

The win was the first ever for the Lady Eagles (4-4-4, 3-0-0 BSC) against the Bulldogs in 10 tries. Asheville was 8-0-1 against Winthrop coming into Wednesday's match.

The Lady Eagles are now unbeaten in their last five matches (4-0-1) and remain perfect in the Big South at 3-0-0.

It was a frustrating loss for the Bulldogs (2-10-0, 0-3-0 BSC). Asheville controlled play for most of the match but could not put the ball past Winthrop goalkeeper Dimitra Poulos. The Bulldogs out-shot the Eagles, 13-6 and had 10 corner kicks to just two for Winthrop.

“It's a frustrating loss but we played very well today,” commented UNC Asheville coach Michele Cornish. “Our effort was very good but we've got to be able to put the ball in the back of the net when we have an opportunity. We had chances today but we didn't score. However, we've been playing much better lately and just need to keep that improvement going.”

The winning goal came when Cassady picked up a loose ball and blasted it in from 20 yards out The ball hit the cross bar and bounced into the goal.

Asheville had several chances led by Robyn Busha. Busha had six shots with four of them on goal. Poulos of Winthrop had seven saves.

UNC Asheville hosts Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Winthrop entertains league rival Coastal Carolina Saturday night at 7 p.m.
