ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Emma Mattsson scored in the 85th minute and Charleston Southern goalkeeper Jenna Uvalle made nine saves as the Buccaneers edged UNC Asheville, 1-0 in Big South Conference women's soccer action at Greenwood Field Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs dominated the match from start to finish as they out-shot CSU, 13-6 but Asheville simply could not score. The Bulldogs fell to 2-11-0 on the year and remained winless in the Big South at 0-4-0. The Lady Bucs won their fifth straight match to improve their record to 9-4-0 overall and 2-1-0 in league play.

“We controlled most of the match but if you don't score you're not going to win,” commented UNC Asheville coach Michele Cornish. “We have got to find a way to get goals. It's too bad because we had a great effort against a very good Charleston Southern team but when they had a an opportunity to score they got the job done.”

The Bucs winning goal came right after Uvalle has made two spectacular saves on Asheville's Robyn Busha. The Bulldogs controlled the ball and Busha fired a shot from 10 yards out that Uvalle just got a piece of and knocked away. Busha got the ball again in front of the goal and Uvalle dived to stop the shot.

CSU quickly countered after that save, and Jen Vroman made a nice run down the left sideline. She fed Mattsson in the outer edge of the box. Mattsson hit a shot from eight yards out that snuck into the net at the 85:36 mark.

Asheville came out strong in the first five minutes of the match as it had six shots in the opening five minutes but could not score. Uvalle made four saves in the first half as the Bulldogs had a 7-3 edge in shots at halftime. Joy Haynes of UNC Asheville just missed on a shot from five yards out.

In the second half, CSU controlled play early as the Bucs picked up two quick shots in the first 10 minutes and had a corner kick.

The Bulldogs regained control and had the better of play until Mattsson got loose for her seventh goal of the year.

UNC Asheville plays next at league rival High Point Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Charleston Southern heads to BSC foe Coastal Carolina Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.
